What is controller drift?

Controller drift is a common issue that occurs with gaming controllers, specifically on consoles like the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. It occurs when the joysticks on the controller begin to move on their own, even when not being touched by the player.

This can make gameplay difficult and frustrating, as the drifting joystick can cause the game to respond incorrectly to input. Controller drift can be caused by a variety of factors, including dust and debris getting inside the controller, wear and tear from prolonged use, or manufacturer defects.

There are several ways to try and fix controller drift, such as recalibrating the controller, cleaning the joystick with compressed air or alcohol, or replacing the joystick entirely. However, in some cases, controller drift may persist despite attempts to fix it, requiring the player to replace the controller altogether.

Controller drift has become a well-known issue among gamers, and many have expressed frustration with having to deal with it on their gaming controllers. Manufacturers have also been under scrutiny for not addressing the issue more effectively in their products.
